These Kids Today “Kids today are being controlled by smartphones, and becoming enslaved by them.” Ryuta Kawashima, Professor at the institute of Development, Aging, and Cancer at Tohoku University     Joe Clement & Matt Miles, authors of Screen Schooled: Two Veteran Teachers Expose How Technology Overuse Is Making Our Kids Dumber invite readers to re-evaluate the impact of screen time on children’s cognitive development.  The author’s ask the reader to make a list of 10 things that kids today need.   Making my own list of 10, it was interesting to consider that asking kids to spend more time on their devices, as predicted by the authors, was not on my list.   Although a simple list doesn’t’ bring us closer to answering the question: “Are digital natives really tech savvy?”, it does start the process of identifying how children are using digital tools and resources.  The author’s present evidence-based researc...

Are digital natives really tech savvy? “With an average of ten electronic connected devices per household, screen-based technologies have become inescapable.   As of 2013, 90 percent of American adults have cell phones (64% of which are smartphones), 42% own tablets and computers, and 32% have e-readers. ….. Today, 56% of six-year-olds have their own cell phones and 80% of twelve to eighteen-year-olds have them.” (Clement & Miles pp23-24) Are digital natives really tech savvy?   The implications of this question extend not only to educational practice, but to workplace expectations of millennials.   The exploration of this question will be considered through the core principles of the Designing Digital Learning in Schools MEd. program.   The book Screen Schooled by Joe Clement and Matt Miles will provide the framework for discussion.   My expertise comes from 5 years of software development experience and over 15 years in the Fairfax County Public School ...
